A Lesson in Community Gardening

Pupils from Lyndhurst Community Primary School joined volunteers of Dukinfield Central community garden to learn more about gardening and its positive impact on the neighbourhood.

The groups got together to sow seeds in the raised beds, create hanging baskets and plant sunflower seeds to have a growing competition at the school.

There are also plans to arrange a litter pick-up around the estate, a seed library and plant cutting swap shop and for special artworks created by the children to be displayed throughout the garden.

The community-focused day was organised by the Jigsaw Homes Neighbourhood Engagement Team to make the garden more inclusive to children and to show them the benefits of working together to make environmental improvements to the neighbourhood.

John McGlynn, Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Officer said: “Getting the school children involved in the community garden is a fantastic opportunity to build good relationships between young people and the adults who enjoy gardening.  We hope to help to create a neighbourhood that looks improved and can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their age or level of gardening experience”.
