Delivering Hoarding Guidance in Tameside

Jigsaw’s Hoarding Specialist, Jayne Mee, attended the Social Work Show in Manchester to deliver specialist guidance for professionals working with Tameside residents that may exhibit hoarding behaviour.

The newly launched guidance created in partnership with Tameside Adult Safeguarding Partnership Board and several organisations as part of a ‘task and finish group’. The group includes Ashton Pioneer Homes, GM Fire and Rescue Service, GM Police, Tameside Children’s Services, Pennine Care, Ian Porter from Hoarders Helping Hoarders and members of the Tameside and Salford Hoarding Peer Support Groups.

The purpose of the guidance, which can be viewed here>>, is to increase a professional’s knowledge and understanding of the complex and highly stigmatised issue of hoarding, and is practical and useful for those working with residents who exhibit hoarding behaviour.

Jayne presented the guidance alongside Lei-Anne Granger, Adult Safeguarding Lead from Tameside Adult Service, to 200 delegates, including those from Adult Services across the UK, newly qualified social workers and other public sector agencies.

Jayne said: “I have really enjoyed working on the guidance with my colleagues from across Tameside and the peers from the Salford and Tameside peer support groups (who are the real hoarding experts).

“It has been a real collaboration which has enabled us to create a useful and practical guide. This guide will support staff working with people who exhibit hoarding behaviour and can be used with any residents who exhibit hoarding behaviour, not just in Tameside.”

Alongside the launch of this new guidance, Tameside Adult Safeguarding Board is offering hoarding training to colleagues working in Tameside, and is facilitated by Ian Porter from Hoarders Helping Hoarders.

The training will be delivered on 24 October 2023 from 10am-1pm at Dukinfield Town Hall. If you would like to book a place on the session, please email protectadult@tameside.gov.uk.
