Miles Platting Community Grocers recently reopened with a fresh new look, commemorated by a special celebration event.
Gemma Bennet, Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Officer, organised the reopening of the popular grocers, which was attended by residents, volunteers, councillors and the Lord Mayor of Manchester.
Contractors CLC did the repainting as part of their social value programme as part of their upcoming work on home refurbishments for our Asset Management team. The Grocer was closed for six weeks while the work took place to repaint inside and refresh the bathroom.
The Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Carmine Grimshaw attended the reopening alongside Councillor June Hitchens, and several colleagues, local residents and volunteers.
The grocer, which runs every Thursday and provides food delivered from Fareshare, also introduced a new points system for residents, meaning they could get 7 points of food for just £4. Items ranged from toiletries, fresh vegetables, tins, dry food, frozen meals, and other tasty treats.
One resident Rose, who has volunteered at the grocer for nine years, said: “It’s been nice to be back, and the points system has been very well received so far. I really enjoy volunteering at the grocers, it’s a great way to get out, meet people you wouldn’t normally speak to. It can get quite busy, but I love making sure everyone feels at ease, especially if it’s their first time visiting.”
