Community Volunteers Build Skills

Community Volunteers Build Skills

Volunteers took part in an informative day of training in Miles Platting to support our community grocers.

Neighbourhood Engagement Officers Asmina Choudhury and John McGlynn hosted a community grocer induction training programme at Baker House, welcoming a total of 13 new and existing volunteers from our Miles Platting and Ashton Central Community Grocers.

The training focused on supporting volunteers in their roles and covered essential skills and knowledge needed to run a community grocer, while giving attendees the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from one another.

Topics included safeguarding adults and children, good customer service, manual handling, conflict management, handling personal data securely, and understanding personal and professional boundaries.

The workshop was co-designed by our Officers following requests from residents and volunteers for additional support and training at the start of their role.

As part of the programme, each volunteer also completed Food Hygiene Level 2 training and received accredited qualifications in Food Safety at Work and Consumer Protection.

One resident, Buddi from Miles Platting, said: “It gave me very good and useful knowledge before I start volunteering. The programme was well organised, and the tutors made it really clear to understand.”

Volunteer Trevor from Ashton added: “John and Asmina made me feel valued and helped me improve my knowledge. I enjoyed meeting other grocer volunteers and the information provided was professionally delivered.”

The courses form part of our commitment to investing in our communities and supporting our resident’s professional development.
