What to tell us

Tell us what happened in your own words. Where possible, it helps to include the following:

  • What happened
  • When and where it happened
  • Who was involved, if known
  • Details of any witnesses
  • Any photographs, screenshots, messages or other evidence
  • Whether you’ve already reported it to the police or another organisation.

(You can still report an incident if you don’t have all of this information.)

What is classed as a hate incident?

A hate incident is behaviour that you believe was motivated by hostility or prejudice because of someone’s:

  • Disability
  • Race or ethnicity
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Transgender identity

It can include verbal abuse, threats, harassment, intimidation, damage to property, offensive graffiti or abuse online.

A victim does not have to be a member of the group at which the hostility is targeted. In fact, anyone could be a victim of a hate crime. You can report an incident that has happened to you or one that you have witnessed happening to someone else.

Why reporting matters...

Reporting hate incidents and hate crimes helps to make communities safer for everyone and take action where we can. It allows organisations, landlords, support services, and the police to understand what’s happening, take appropriate action, and provide support to those affected.

By reporting an incident:

  • You can help stop the behaviour from happening again, whether to you or to someone else
  • You may be able to access support and advice to help you feel safe and supported
  • Patterns of repeat behaviour can be identified, helping organisations take action against individuals responsible
  • Communities become safer and more inclusive when hate incidents are recognised and addressed
  • Even if no immediate action can be taken, your report helps build a clearer picture of the issues affecting local residents.

You do not need to be certain that what happened was a hate crime before reporting it. If something made you feel targeted because of who you are, it’s important to let someone know. Your report could make a difference to you, your neighbours, and your wider community.
