Six residents completed a two-day course in Barista Skills Level 1 at The Dukinfield Hub in Tameside last week.
The course was organised by Neighbourhood Engagement Officer John McGlynn who targeted unemployed Jigsaw residents who want to find work in hospitality. The in-depth, practical course was delivered by Steve Baker (SBS Training and Consulting).
Everyone learned about the history of coffee, took part in a coffee tasting experience sampling a wide variety of speciality coffee from around the world and hands on preparing and making coffees including espresso, flat white and cappuccino.
One resident said: “The course really helped me to understand all things coffee. I learned how to use the equipment, measurements and the important hygiene aspect of making coffee, maintaining and using the commercial coffee machine. It was all very useful and will be helpful as I try to get a job in the industry. I really appreciate being given the opportunity to complete the course”.
Everyone gained an AQA level 1 in Barista Skills Award after demonstrating their new competency levels and skills in making a variety of specialised coffees using professional equipment. The team also provided interview techniques, CV tips and how to sell themselves well when applying for jobs in person or online.
