MP Visits New Tameside Community Hub

The Rt Hon Angela Rayner MP paid a special visit to a newly opened community hub in Tameside that is already making a difference to the lives of local residents.

The MP for Ashton-under-Lyne visited the Ashton Central Community Hub, run by Jigsaw Homes Group, to see first-hand how the facility is helping to provide hundreds of residents with access to vital support and services.

Based at Cavendish Mill in Ashton, the hub officially opened in May and provides a welcoming space including a community grocer offering low-cost food and a community wardrobe stocked with donated clothing – along with space for hosting a variety of projects including creative drama, arts and crafts and cooking sessions.

During her visit, Ms Rayner met Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Officer, Minaz Aslam, who helps run the hub, Group Chief Executive Brian Moran and Operations Director of Neighbourhoods Ivan Wright.

She took time to chat to members of community groups and partner organisations that use the hub, including WISH, a parent and carer support group for families of children with SEND, PC Refurb, which provides digital skills training to help people access the online world, Hoarding Helping Hoarders, a peer support group for people living with hoarding disorder and the NeoNatal Knitters, who create blankets and booties for premature babies.

Angela Rayner MP said: “What really stands out about this hub is the community spirit – with people coming together to support one another, learn new skills and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

“With low-cost food options and access to training, services and support, the hub is delivering exactly the kind of thing that helps communities thrive. I’m delighted to see the impact it’s already having.”

The community grocer and wardrobe is open every Monday from 1pm to 2.30pm.

A programme of activities is also being planned for children and families during the school holidays, while Jigsaw’s Neighbourhood Engagement Team will offer a range of free advice services covering areas such as energy support, mental wellbeing, employment opportunities and access to training courses.

Brian Moran, Chief Executive of Jigsaw Homes Group, said: “The Ashton Central Community Hub is a great example of how we can bring people together, create opportunities and provide practical help where it’s needed most. We are delighted with the positive impact the hub is already having and look forward to seeing it continue to grow as a valuable community asset.”
