As part of Black History Month, Jigsaw Homes are focusing on ways in which we have taken action to create real change in local communities.
The Neighbourhood team are involved in the Moss Side Community Fund which has helped provide funding to the community youth group KYSO.
The group, based in Moss Side, was established in 2012 in response to the London riots and aims to support young people through creative means and performing arts. They received £9,000 in funding which has helped them to purchase media equipment and upgrade their studio.
In celebration of Black History Month, the group will also be discussing many topics related to Black history, including a focus on Black people in the media, alongside educating people on the importance of the month.
Minister Kemoy Walker who founded the project said: “KYSO has so many young, talented, creative individuals who produce a lot of media work whether it be taking amazing shots on their smartphones or creating new logos for a friend’s cake business.
“The equipment given has supported and advanced creativity throughout the year and has allowed our young creators to think bigger with their ideas without being limited to what device they use. It has also given the multimedia team for KYSO the opportunity to make better content and reach a wider audience on our social media platforms.”
KYSO member Victoria Santos said: “Since I received the camera it has encouraged me to reach out and grow my personal photography page and use it as a start to a new career.”
Akisha Nixon said: “I never thought I would own my own camera due to the expenses. I’m over the moon and so excited; I can take professional shots all on my own.”
